About the Word to PDF

A PDF looks the same on every device and cannot be edited by accident, which is why CVs, applications, invoices and reports are usually sent as PDF rather than as a Word file. Converting is also the usual answer when a form says “PDF only”.

This tool opens the .docx in your browser and lays out its pages with their fonts, tables, images, headers and footers, so you can check every page before converting. Each page is then drawn at 192 DPI, sharp on screen and in print, and saved into a PDF that downloads straight away. A hidden text layer is added under the pages so Latin-script text can still be searched and copied. Your document never leaves your device. Layout is done by your browser rather than by Microsoft Word, so complex documents can differ in small ways.

How to use the Word to PDF

  1. 1

Drop a .docx file onto the page or choose one from your device. A preview of every page appears.

  2. 2

Check the pages, then press “Convert and download PDF”.

  3. 3

The PDF downloads when every page has been drawn.

Examples

1A document saved by Microsoft Word
Before
report.docx with saved page breaks
After
Pages break where Word breaks them, with headers and footers on every page
2A document exported from another app
Before
notes.docx with no saved page layout
After
Pages are split between paragraphs, so breaks can differ from Word; headers and footers are on every page

Good to know

  • Only .docx files. Save older .doc files as .docx in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs first.
  • Pages are saved as high-resolution pictures with hidden text, so the PDF is larger than one exported from Word, and text in non-Latin scripts (such as Hindi) is visible but not searchable.
  • Fonts that are not installed on your device are replaced by similar ones, which can move line and page breaks.
  • Text boxes, shapes, charts, equations and tracked changes may not appear exactly as in Word. Links in the document are not clickable in the PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I select and copy text in the PDF?

Yes, for text in Latin script: an invisible text layer sits under each page, so you can search, select and copy it. Text in other scripts is shown correctly but is part of the page picture only.

Will the PDF look exactly like Word?

Simple and medium documents (text, headings, lists, tables, pictures) usually come out very close. Complex layouts and missing fonts can shift things, so the preview shows every page before you convert.

Why is the PDF bigger than the Word file?

Each page is stored as a sharp picture so it looks the same everywhere. Pages with photos take the most space. Run the result through Compress PDF if you need it smaller.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files are opened and processed in your browser, in a background thread. Nothing is uploaded, so the tool also works for confidential documents.
