Character Counter
Count characters as you type and see how much room is left for an Instagram caption, X post, YouTube title, meta description or SMS.
Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
About the Character Counter
Social posts, ads and web pages all have character limits: 280 for an X post, 2,200 for an Instagram caption, 100 for a YouTube title, about 160 for a Google meta description, and 160 per SMS (only 70 if the message contains Hindi or emoji). Going over means your text is cut off or rejected.
Type or paste your text to see the character count and how many characters are left for each common limit, with anything over the limit marked. Characters are counted the way people see them, so an emoji or a Hindi letter with its matra counts once. The SMS line shows how many parts a message will be sent in. Word count, reading time and the other counts are shown alongside.

- 1

- Words are split using your browser’s language rules, which work for most languages. For Chinese, Japanese and Thai, word counts are estimates.
- Characters count what you see: an emoji or an accented letter counts as one, even when it is stored as several code units.
- Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time 150, the commonly cited averages for adults. Technical text reads slower.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, on every platform. The counts also show characters without spaces if you need them for a form.
Why does my SMS count drop to 70 characters?
Text with characters outside the basic SMS alphabet, such as Hindi letters or emoji, is sent as Unicode, which fits 70 characters per message (67 per part when split).
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. Everything is processed in your browser. Your text is never sent to our servers or stored anywhere.
